A Message from John

Growing up in a family of seven kids, I learned at an early age about the importance of standing up to be heard and in fighting for what you believe.

I worry greatly about the America we are passing on to our children. Overwhelming debt, unsustainable spending, a weak national security, and a government bureaucracy that believes the best fix to any problem is an expanded federal one.

As Central New York’s representative in Congress, I’ve been fighting through partisan gridlock to change that. I’m focused on growing the economy to create jobs and keeping Americans safe in a dangerous world.

I’ll continue to be a strong voice for our community in Washington. Please support me as your Congressman for New York’s 24th Congressional District.

Experienced and Tested

Prior to serving Central New York in Congress, John Katko spent nearly twenty years as a federal prosecutor. He worked to keep our community safe as a prosecutor, and is working to keep our country safe in Congress.

  • Bringing People Together.

In his role as a leader of the Syracuse Gang Violence Task Force, John brought prosecutors, police, clergy, community leaders, and neighbors from differing backgrounds together to successfully reduce violence crime and improve the quality of life in targeted neighborhoods within our community.

  • Fighting for All.

John spent sixteen years traveling across Upstate New York in his role as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, prosecuting corrupt politicians, business frauds, drug traffickers, and gang members and making our community safer for every Central New York family regardless of race, creed, culture, or address. In Congress, he's continuing that fight. He's working to keep our community safe, to grow our local economy, and to combat the devastating heroin and synthetic drug epidemic.

  • Focused on Results.

John’s professional career rested on his fair and decisive conviction of those who break the law, cheat the system, and harm our children. He's taken that results-focused success to Congress to work for us in Washington, passing legislation to prioritize national security, ending the common core mandate, and delivering a bipartisan, long-term highway bill.

  • Bipartisan Recognition.

John has served under three different U.S. Presidents and received the highest professional honors from multiple Attorneys General – from both parties – and the Director of the FBI.

  • DANA BALTER CAUGHT IN ANOTHER LIE

    October 26th, 2018

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK– John Katko and Dana Balter held their first debate at the offices of the Post Standard/syracuse.com on Wednesday.  During an exchange on immigration policy, and the caravan of migrants approaching the United States Border, Dana Balter denied that she supports the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Further, she evaded the question of whether she attended a rally, held by Balter-founded CNY Solidarity, that was focused on calling for the abolition of ICE. Dana Balter did indeed attend this rally, as the photo below clearly shows.

    image-2 (1).png

In light of this exchange, the Katko for Congress campaign today released the following statement:

“Dana Balter knows her views are too extreme for Central New York, so she has once again tried to cover up her position on a big issue. She attended a rally organized by a hard-left group that she helped found that called for the abolishment of ICE, and now wants the people of Central New York to believe otherwise.

“Dana Balter can’t have it both ways. She can’t join her extreme-left friends In protesting the existence of ICE one day and claim that she doesn’t support abolishing ICE on another.

“This is not the first time that Dana Balter has attempted an ideological cover up on the people of Central New York, and as her campaign desperately tries to hide her extreme-left views in the final days of the campaign, it almost certainly won’t be the last.

“Robust border security, and strong immigration enforcement programs, including ICE, are vital to our national security. Dana Balter showed her true colors when she protested the existence of ICE. The voters of CNY aren’t going to be fooled by her attempts to cover it up now.”

  • Dana Balter’s Slanderous Attack on Congressman John Katko

    October 25th, 2018

SYRACUSE, New York – Following a debate yesterday evening hosted by the Syracuse Post Standard/Syracuse.com in which Dana Balter accused Congressman John Katko of illegally allowing a campaign contribution to influence his work on the House Homeland Security Committee, Katko for Congress Communications Director Erin O’Connor released the following statement:

“Last night, Dana Balter made a grave, slanderous, and entirely unsubstantiated claim against Congressman Katko, suggesting the Congressman illegally allowed a campaign contribution to influence a vote before the House Homeland Security Committee.

“First, to be completely and unequivocally clear: Representative Katko, a former federal prosecutor, has always dutifully followed, and required strict compliance with, every law governing Members of Congress and their staffs.  For Dana Balter to suggest otherwise without proof is appalling.

“The amendment in question was offered by Democrats on the Committee.  Along with every other member of the Committee – Democrat and Republican – Congressman Katko joined in supporting this non-controversial amendment.

“In this case, as in countless others, Congressman Katko worked with Democrats to incorporate their ideas into bipartisan, security-oriented legislation. This is the kind of bipartisanship and cooperation that Dana Balter has repeatedly proven she can’t understand or support.

“Dana Balter’s political extremism has reached a point that she is now attacking members of her own party for engaging in constructive, bipartisan legislating. If Dana Balter’s hard-left extremism wasn’t disqualifying enough, her willingness to engage in an outright lie and dirty trick like this certainly is.”

    Background

    • The legislative text of the bill in question was unanimously approved by both Democratic and Republican Members of the Committee.  It specifically directs an assessment of vetting practices aimed at enhancing the security of PreCheck in the most cost-effective manner to the American taxpayer. Under Congressman Katko’s leadership, TSA has repeatedly been directed to improve vetting standards and end poor security practices, including diverting passengers who are not enrolled and vetted to PreCheck standards into PreCheck screening lanes.
    • As HR 2843, and more recent legislation, HR 6265, demonstrate, Congressman Katko has worked tirelessly to protect traveling Americans from terror attacks in his capacity as a Subcommittee Chairman on the House Homeland Security Committee.
    • Enrollees in TSA PreCheck, along with all US travelers, are vetted against terrorist watch lists, such as the No-Fly List. Additionally, PreCheck enrollees, in order to voluntarily participate in the program, provide their fingerprints to TSA for an FBI Criminal History Records Check. This has always been the case and Congressman Katko believes it always should be. No aspect of his legislative record demonstrates otherwise.
