A Message from John

Growing up in a family of seven kids, I learned at an early age about the importance of standing up to be heard and in fighting for what you believe.

I worry greatly about the America we are passing on to our children. Overwhelming debt, unsustainable spending, a weak national security, and a government bureaucracy that believes the best fix to any problem is an expanded federal one.

As Central New York’s representative in Congress, I’ve been fighting through partisan gridlock to change that. I’m focused on growing the economy to create jobs and keeping Americans safe in a dangerous world.

I’ll continue to be a strong voice for our community in Washington. Please support me as your Congressman for New York’s 24th Congressional District.

Experienced and Tested

Prior to serving Central New York in Congress, John Katko spent nearly twenty years as a federal prosecutor. He worked to keep our community safe as a prosecutor, and is working to keep our country safe in Congress.

  • Bringing People Together.

In his role as a leader of the Syracuse Gang Violence Task Force, John brought prosecutors, police, clergy, community leaders, and neighbors from differing backgrounds together to successfully reduce violence crime and improve the quality of life in targeted neighborhoods within our community.

  • Fighting for All.

John spent sixteen years traveling across Upstate New York in his role as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, prosecuting corrupt politicians, business frauds, drug traffickers, and gang members and making our community safer for every Central New York family regardless of race, creed, culture, or address. In Congress, he's continuing that fight. He's working to keep our community safe, to grow our local economy, and to combat the devastating heroin and synthetic drug epidemic.

  • Focused on Results.

John’s professional career rested on his fair and decisive conviction of those who break the law, cheat the system, and harm our children. He's taken that results-focused success to Congress to work for us in Washington, passing legislation to prioritize national security, ending the common core mandate, and delivering a bipartisan, long-term highway bill.

  • Bipartisan Recognition.

John has served under three different U.S. Presidents and received the highest professional honors from multiple Attorneys General – from both parties – and the Director of the FBI.

  • Central New York Mom Living the Tragedy of Bail Reform: Balter is “Very Dangerous”

    September 18th, 2020

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – Katko for Congress today released a new television advertisement highlighting the devastating, real-life impacts of bail reform, a policy Dana Balter fervently supports.
The ad features Jennifer Payne, a Syracuse mother, who tragically lost her daughter, Sarah, when she was shot to death by her live-in boyfriend.  The boyfriend was arrested and charged with the homicide, but was subsequently released from jail under New York’s new bail reform law. Democrat Onondaga County Judge Gordon Cuffy at the time noted that he had no other choice but to release the perpetrator.  Since that time, Jennifer has become an outspoken advocate against bail reform.

In the ad, Payne, a registered Democrat, announces she firmly disagrees with Balter’s support of the plan, calling Balter “out-of-touch,” and explaining she will vote against Dana Balter because, “her policies are very dangerous.”

Dana Balter has endorsed Albany’s dangerous bail reform, a policy which has been criticized even by local Democrats as going too far for its requirement to release violent criminals into the community.  Balter supports bringing these policies to the federal level. Proposals that go even further than New York’s bail reform are championed by the progressive caucus, which has endorsed Balter.  And, Balter supports the HEROES Act, which would require early release of dangerous criminals.

The ad is available here.  It began airing this morning on area broadcast, cable and on digital.

Endorsements were announced from Teamsters Local 317,  CNY Building & Construction Trades Council, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 267, IBEW Local 43, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 158, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 73, New England Regional Council of Carpenters Local 277, Laborer’s International Union of North America Local 633, International Association of Sheet Metal, Air Rail and Transportation Workers Local 58, and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen Division 169. Together, these unions represent thousands of hardworking men and women across Central New York.

  • New Ad Shares Dana Balter’s Dangerous Plan to Release Criminals into our Community

    September 12th, 2020

Syracuse, New York – Katko for Congress today released a new ad highlighting the devastating impact of Dana Balter’s support for bail reform and legislation to require the release of prisoners nationwide.

Dana Balter has endorsed Albany’s dangerous bail reform, a policy which has been criticized even by local Democrats as going too far for its requirement to release violent criminals into the community.  Proposals that go even further than New York’s bail reform are championed by the progressive caucus, which has endorsed Balter.

What’s more, Balter wholeheartedly supports Nancy Pelosi’s HEROES Act, which would require the early release of federal prisoners and prevent the deportation of criminals.
“At a time when crime is on the rise in our community, Dana Balter’s plan is to bring Albany’s dangerous bail reform to the federal level.  And, she endorses Pelosi’s bill to require the release of prisoners from federal prison nationwide,” said Katko for Congress Campaign Manager Tom Haag. “Balter attacks Congressman Katko’s career in law enforcement while pushing a dangerous platform that will only endanger Central New York families.  Who can we trust to keep our community safe and reform our criminal justice system responsibly – John Katko, a former federal prosecutor, or Dana Balter, a far-left, visiting assistant professor?”

The ad can be accessed here.  It will begin airing immediately on area broadcast, cable, and will run on digital platforms.
